Grand List

The Grand List is the official record of all taxable property within a municipality, compiled annually by the local assessor's office. It serves as the foundation for determining property taxes and includes the assessed values of:

  • Real Estate: Land and buildings.
  • Motor Vehicles: Cars, trucks, and other vehicles.
  • Personal Property: Business equipment and other tangible assets.

The grand list reflects property values as of October 1st each year and is typically finalized by the following January 31st. Municipalities use this list to set the mill rate, which is the amount of tax payable per $1,000 of assessed value. For example, a property assessed at $100,000 with a mill rate of 30 would incur $3,000 in property taxes.
