[ARCHIVED] Churchill Park Surfacing Renovation

Churchill Park Playground - Before Renovation, featuring slides and climbing obstacles

The Newington Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the resurfacing of the existing playgrounds at Churchill Park this summer.  In an effort to reduce injuries and increase overall safety, the Department will be installing a rubber playground safety surface similar to what was installed at Mill Pond playground.  "The engineered rubber safety surface reduces maintenance and increases handicapped accessibility for those physically challenged", said Bill DeMaio, Superintendent of Newington Parks and Recreation.  The project will include the installation of handicapped accessible asphalt paths from the large pavilion connecting to each of the playgrounds and then over to the existing path that leads to the handicapped parking in the large lot.  If funding is approved in the budget process, a 2 year old to 5 year old playground will be installed and connected.  New drainage will be installed under the rubber surface as well as around the perimeter of the playgrounds and tied into the existing catch basins.  This will reduce the erosion that exists today.  With the good comes some minor inconveniences.  The construction area will be fenced off and not accessible to the public from approximately August 1st to October 14th.  We wanted all our residents to be informed about this fact as they make plans to rent the three different picnic areas this summer.  If you have any questions regarding the project, please do not hesitate to contact Bill DeMaio.
