[ARCHIVED] Weather/Power Update

Office of Emergency Management New Flash

Response to Severe Storm and Update of Power Restoration

A severe storm went through Newington at approximately 10:00pm on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 causing approximately 2500 residents/businesses to loose power.

Based on information received this morning, that several Town Buildings (Town Hall, Police Department, Senior Center, and Library) were without power and operating on generators, the Town Manager ordered a partial activation of the Emergency Operations Center.  The cause of the power outage to the Town campus was due to a large tree falling on Willard Avenue near the High School.  Due to the Power/Utility outage and limited generator coverage the Town Hall was closed at 12:00pm.  The library was closed and will remain closed for the day.  The Senior Center was open to residents and will remain open until 8pm this evening.  All public meetings for this evening have been cancelled.

Power Restoration -

Eversource is actively working on removing a large tree from the power lines on Willard Avenue between Cedar Street and Veterans Way.  To do this, they have isolated that section and have restored power to as much of the Town as possible.  At this time, approximately 500 customers remain without power.  Once the tree is removed, two utility poles will be replaced and all of the wires (Primaries, Secondary, Communication, Fiber, etc.) will be rehung and put back into sevice.

In order to complete the repairs, this section of Willard Avenue will remain closed to traffic.

Traffic Routes

If you are traveling on Willard Avenue and need to go east on Cedar Street - it is recommended to use Stoddard Avenue to Main Street (south) to Cedar Street.

If you are traveling on Willard and need to go west on Cedar - it is recommended to use West Hill to Fenn Road (South) to Cedar Street.

The gate on Alumni Road will be opened at 3:00pm to assist with traffic as well.

Future Updates:

The Newington Police Department will advise when Willard Avenue is re-opened.
