1. How do I obtain a landfill permit?: Residents may obtain landfill permits at the Town Highway Garage (281 Milk Lane) Monday, Wednesday & Thursday 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Tuesday 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. or at the Town Hall in the Town Clerk’s office Monday, Wednesday & Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Tuesday, 8:30 am to 6:00 pm & Friday, 8:30 to noon. License and registration of residents’ vehicle are required to obtain a sticker. Permit Application Form

2. How do I schedule a bulk collection?: Bulk collection is done every Thursday and residents are asked to contact Trash Away (860)-229-1164 to schedule a pick up. Each residence is allowed two non-metal items per week and must contact the hauler prior to 1:00 on Wednesday to schedule a pick up. The town is allowed a maximum of 165 stops per week therefore scheduling is done on a first come first serve basis.

3. How do I schedule a scrap metal pick up: Scrap metal collection is done every Tuesday and residents are asked to contact Trash Away (860)-229-1164 to schedule a pick up. The deadline for scheduling a scrap metal pick up is 1:00 on Monday. The fee for the first item is $12.00 and $5.00 for each additional item. Residents may also bring the scrap metal to the Town Landfill during operating hours.

4. How do I obtain a second trash container?: Residents may obtain a second trash container by contacting Trash Away (860)-229-1164. The annual non-prorated fee is $95.00.

5. How do I obtain additional recycling container?: Residents may obtain an additional recycling container by contacting Trash Away at (860)-229-1164. Currently there is no charge for the additional container.

7. How do I recycle light bulbs?: Fluorescent and CFL bulbs may be recycled as part of the Town's Ewaste program at the Town's Landfill during operating hours. Incandescent bulbs are not recyclable and my be disposed of in your green trash container.

Excess or old paint may be recycled as part of the CT DEEP's Paint recycling program or recycle as part of the MDC Hazardous Waste Collection program

1. How does Newington benefit from single stream recycling?: Recyclables diverted from the waste stream lower the cost the town pays in disposal fees for MSW (household garbage), currently there is no charge to dispose of recyclable material. Recycling not only helps the environment, it also saves money. For more information, please call 860-667-5874.

2. Will there be any change in my household trash collection (green container)?: No, there will be no changes in your current household trash collection, the day and frequency of the collection will remain the same. For more information, please call 860-667-5874.

3. Which container is for recycling and which one is for trash?: The blue container will be used for recycling only (no trash). The green container will continue to be used for household trash. For more information, please call 860-667-5874.

4. What material should be placed in your blue recycling container?: For the most current list of recyclable items please visit Recyclect.com

5. What happens if I put my container out on the wrong week?: It will not be collected. For more information, please call 860-229-1164.

6. Do I still need to separate recyclables?: No. With single stream recycling you will no longer need to bag or bundle paper and cardboard, or separate plastic and glass, simply place all your acceptable recyclables into your container and wheel it to the curb. Please remember to rinse glass and plastic containers prior to placing them in the container. Also, remember that items not placed in the recycling container will not be collected. 7. What about leaves, grass, and yard waste?: These items must not be placed in the blue recycling container or the green refuse container. Residents may bring yard debris (permit required) and grass and leaves (proof of residency required) to the Town Landfill located on Main Street (adjacent to Churchill Park). Permits may be obtained at the Highway Department.

8. Can I use the blue recycling container for excess trash?: No. Please do not place any household waste in the recycling container, only recyclables should be placed in the blue container. If you need an additional refuse or recycling container, please contact Trash Away at 860-229-1164 for details. For those residents with excess recyclables, acceptable items may be brought to the Town Landfill during
regular operating hours.
