1. How do I register for a program?

Convenient ways to register: Fax-in: Complete and sign the registration form. Do not include credit card information. PLEASE call to confirm that your fax came through and provide credit card information (if applicable) at 860-665-8666. Fax to 860-665-8739. 

Mail-in: Complete and sign the registration form. Include VISA, MasterCard or Discover credit card information or make checks payable to “Newington Parks & Recreation.” Mail to Newington Parks & Recreation, 131 Cedar Street, Newington, CT 06111. 

Walk-in: Register in our office, which is located in the Mortensen Community Center at Town Hall, 131 Cedar Street, Newington, CT.  Walk-in office hours are: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. *Drop slot may be available after hours.

2. How do I know if my program will be cancelled due to inclement weather?

Program information and cancellations due to inclement weather are available on our program hotline number (860-665-8686). When there are program cancellations due to inclement weather during the week, the hotline is generally updated by 9 a.m. for morning programs, 12 p.m. for afternoon programs and 4:30 p.m. for evening programs. Weekend updated times during inclement weather may vary due to program schedules. During the summer, aquatic program cancellations will be posted on the Pool Activity Line at 860-665-8766.

3. When are your Program Guides published?

Spring Program Guide – distributed to Newington residents in the March issue of Newington Life

Summer Program Guide – distributed to Newington residents in the May issue of Newington Life

Fall Program Guide – distributed to Newington residents in the September issue of Newington Life

Winter Program Guide – distributed to Newington residents in the November issue of Newington Life

4. What if I have an idea for a program?

If you have an idea for a program, put together a proposal and email to a Recreation Supervisor. Alternatively, you can drop off the proposal for a Recreation Supervisor's review.

5. How do I reserve a facility?

6. Who takes care of the town trees?

Trees on town roads, parks, and town buildings are the responsibility of the Tree Warden in the Parks and Recreation Department’s Parks and Grounds Division.

7. When will my tree be cut down?

Contact the Tree Warden at the Parks & Grounds Department at 860-667-5830.

8. How do I find out when a specific site will be mowed…or who do I call about grass / brush on the side of the road?

The Park Department mowing schedule is flexible depending on a variety of factors and ranges from 6 days to monthly, depending on site. Grass and brush on roadsides are mowed by Parks and Grounds staff. To contact the Parks and Grounds Division, please call 860-667-5830.

9. Who do I talk to about buying a cemetery plot?

Call the Parks & Grounds Department for West Meadow Cemetery at (860) 667-5830. Parks Department staff.

10. When will my ball field be ready to play on?

The Parks and Grounds staff has approximately 30 fields to prepare in the spring and fall, generally proceeding from the largest sizes to the smallest. Certain fields may be completed out of order due to scheduling demands. Contact the Parks & Grounds Department at (860) 667-5830.

11. How long does it take to receive a refund?

It takes 2 to 3 weeks for a refund to be fully processed.

12. How old do you have to be to work for the Parks and Recreation Department?

Certified lifeguards and concession stand attendants can be 15 years old; most other positions applicants must be 16 years old.

13. When do you accept applications?

Applications are accepted year-round, unless an application deadline is set. For summer positions, we usually set an application deadline in March. Due to the number of applications we receive, we highly recommend applying early. However, depending on current staffing needs, we may still have positions available until our summer programs begin.
