1. How can I become a notary public?

The Notary Public Manual and the Application For Appointment As Notary Public can be accessed on the notary public services page, or copies are available from the Town Clerk’s Office. Upon completion of the paperwork, the application is forwarded to the Secretary of the State along with a non-refundable $120 fee. Appointments are for a 5-year term.

2. Why would I want to become a notary public?

There are many reasons why someone would seek to be a notary public. You may be a small business owner or work in an office where clients and customers have frequent need of a notary’s services. You may enjoy the official nature of the duties, or it may be a requirement of your job.

3. Where can I get a document notarized and what do I need to bring with me?

The Town Clerk’s Office performs notarial services during regular office hours. If the notary does not know the signer personally, Connecticut law (Section 3-94a(9)) requires the signer to provide at least 2 forms of identification containing the individual’s signature, at least one of which also contains the photograph of the signer, or a physical description. There is a $5 fee for each signature that is notarized.

Social security cards and birth certificates are not to be used as a form of identification.
