MARRIAGE LICENSE REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION

Marriage Licenses are issued by the Town Clerk’s Office in the town where the marriage will be performed or in the town of residence. Once issued, the marriage license is good for 65 days. There is no waiting period between applying for and receiving your license.

On November 12, 2008, the Connecticut Supreme Court struck down the state's civil union law and ruled that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry.  There is a new marriage license which will be issued to all couples wishing to be married.

The Town Clerk’s office does not perform wedding ceremonies.  We are happy to provide the couple with a list of Newington Justices of the Peace.  Arrangements can be made directly with the Justice you select.

The couple must appear in the Town Clerk’s office to sign the Marriage License. They may come together or individually, but each must sign the document before it can be issued. There is an application/worksheet that requires completion. You will be asked questions regarding your parentage: where your mother and father were born and your mother’s maiden name.  You can bring the completed worksheet with you, or you can complete it when you visit our office.

The fee for the license is $30.00. We also suggest you purchase a certified copy of the license at the same time for an additional $10.00. Total cost for the license and certified copy is $40.00.

Please be sure to bring identification--a valid driver’s license or a valid passport. We accept cash or a personal check for the license.

The process takes from 20-30 minutes depending on activity in the office--no appointment is necessary. The hours to obtain a marriage license are Monday through Friday from 8:30 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. Newington Town Hall is located at 131 Cedar Street. If you have any questions, please call our office at 860-665-8545.
