When are taxes due and what time frame does it cover?
All Motor Vehicle taxes are due in FULL July 1st. Real Estate and Personal Property taxes in amounts $500.00 and over may be paid in full, or may be paid in two installments. The first installment is due July 1st, and the second installment is due January 1st. The taxes must be paid in FULL during the month of the installment dates. You have the entire month to pay your tax bill. All taxes paid late will be subject to an annual interest charge of 1 ½% per month from the DUE DATE (18% a.p.r.) with a minimum interest charge of $2.00 for each account.
Real Estate taxes cover from July 1st through June 30th.
Personal Property taxes cover a business that was operating October 1st of the previous year.
Motor Vehicle taxes cover from October 1st of the previous year through September 30th of the current year.
Supplemental Motor Vehicle taxes cover from the date when the vehicle was registered through September 30th of the previous year.
What type of payment can be made?
Checks are preferred for current bills and should be made out to the Newington Revenue Collector. One check may be made for multiple bills. Credit cards are not accepted in the Tax Office. You may make credit cards payments through Official Payments by contacting them at 1-800-272-9829 or visit

. At the prompt, enter Jurisdiction Code 1732. Official Payments will immediately charge you a service fee.
What if I did not receive all my tax bills or no longer own the property?

What if I receive a bill and my bank or Mortgage Company pays the taxes?
Immediately forward the bill to your bank/mortgage company so the taxes can be paid on time. Then notify them they must request the tax bills from the Town of Newington each year.
What if I cannot pay the tax in full when it is due and will I still have to pay interest?
We will accept a partial payment, and the interest is still charged from the original due date at the rate of 1 ½% per month on the principal amount.
Unpaid Motor Vehicle taxes will be reported delinquent to the Motor Vehicle Dept. the following month after the taxes were due, and registration will not be granted until all taxes are paid. All taxes must be paid in full by certified bank check, money order, or cash to obtain clearance for the Motor Vehicle Dept. If a late registration is being renewed, bring the renewal notice into the Tax Office so it can be stamped after FULL payment is made.
Late is late. The State of Connecticut does not allow anyone to waive interest regardless of what the reason is for the late payment. (Section 12-146 CT General Statutes) FAILURE TO RECEIVE A TAX BILL SHALL NOT INVALIDATE THE TAX OR INTEREST CHARGES.
What if I received a bill for a car I no longer own or have moved out of state?
If you transferred the license plate from one vehicle to another, the tax is still due in full on the old car and you will receive a Supplemental Motor Vehicle tax bill in January for the new car. If you no longer own the car and returned the plate to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, or have moved out of state, you need to supply a copy of the returned plate receipt, or a copy of the out of state registration for a possible adjustment on your bill. What if I moved to another town in Connecticut?
The tax bill is still due. Notify the Tax Office at (860) 665-8540 about your new address, and it is very important to notify the Dept. of Motor Vehicles about the change on your license, and update the address for each registration of each car. You will then receive a bill from the new town next year.
What if I sold my business or are no longer in business?
The tax bill is due for a business that was in town on October 1. There is no prorated bill, and the entire bill is due in full. Any assessment questions should be directed to the Assessor’s Office at (860) 665-8530.
Where do I pay the taxes?
To avoid long lines, you may make your check out to the Newington Revenue Collector, and mail your payment to the Tax Office, 131 Cedar St., Newington, CT 06111. You may come in to the Town Hall to the Tax Office on the Main Floor at 131 Cedar St. between 8:30 and 4:30 Mon. through Fri. If a receipt is needed, please enclose both copies of your bill along with a self-addressed envelope with a stamp on it. Keep your copy for your IRS records.
Are there programs for elderly residents?
Yes. You need to contact the Assessor’s Office at (860) 665-8530 since there are age and income requirements.
Are there programs for Veterans or people in the military?
Yes. If you have your DD214 it must be filed with the Town Clerk (665-8550). If you are on active duty, you may contact the Assessor’s Office at (860) 665-8530. If you are currently in the reserves and are not active, no exemptions are available.
