Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the largest division of the Police Department.  The Patrol Division Division provides first response to all emergencies, performs preliminary investigations, and provides basic patrol services to the Town of Newington.  This unit has undergone a number of changes in the past year from upgrades in facilities and technology to better equipment and enhanced training for its personnel.  All of these changes are directed at increasing the knowledge, skill and productivity of our uniformed personnel so they can perform their duties with the highest level of enthusiasm and professionalism.

Patrol Division has the responsibility to:

  • Provide the first police response to emergencies
  • Perform preliminary investigations and provide basic police patrol services
  • Provide on-duty availability of a Canine Unit for searches and assistance in detecting the location of suspects, missing persons, evidence or contraband
  • Deploy Bicycle Patrol Units to perform routine patrol duties in an aggressive/pro-active manner
  • Traffic Enforcement in marked, unmarked and motorcycle patrols
  • Accident Investigation and parking control
  • All other services as needed.

The following accomplishments in Patrol Division during 2000 were the result of a cooperative effort between towns, cities, Federal, and State agencies:

  • Implemented Regional Laptop computer deployment for field officers.
  • Enhanced computer systems allowing officers to write police reports in the field, access valuable resources such as motor vehicles files, wanted files, department of corrections photographs, connectivity with other departments, and other information based programs.
  • Purchase and deployment of Less Lethal Munitions such as pepper spray, shotgun sock rounds. TASERs, and other equipment.  The entire division has undergone training in each of these items.
  • Purchase, training and deployment of digital cameras for designated officers.  The cameras will be used in the field to document evidence that will be downloaded into a database located at police headquarters.
  • Revisions and upgrades to the Field Training Officer Program by implementing a training block on Community Oriented Policing.
  • Changing the marked fleet to traditional black and white cruiser markings.
  • Added unmarked vehicles to the unit for general patrol and traffic enforcement.
